Cable sizing for this example
Use the diagram as a starting point for your installation. Replace the example equipment and cable lengths with your own, and check the connections against your exact model's instructions.
Cable sizes depend on the connected equipment, current and cable lengths. Add those details in Crimp to size each run.

What differs on the IP65 500 A model?
This is the sealed SmartShunt IP65 500A/50mV, with fixed red Vbatt+, grey Aux and black VE.Direct leads. Use its separate IP65 manual; the IP21 model's push-in terminal procedure does not apply. It uses M10 main bolts, tightened to a maximum 21 N·m, and operates from 6.5–70 V DC.
IP65 does not mean submersible. The published ambient range is −40 to +50 °C, so an engine compartment must remain within that limit. Mount the shunt securely and support the heavy cables so their weight does not strain it.
How is it connected?
Connect battery negative to BATTERY MINUS with no other load or charging returns on that side. Put the negative distribution bus on LOAD MINUS and connect every charger, inverter and load return there. The red fused eyelet goes to bank positive; keep the supplied 1 A slow-blow fuse. Main-cable protection is a separate installation decision.
The grey Aux lead can monitor one additional quantity: another battery's voltage, the midpoint of a series bank, or temperature using the correct sensor wiring. For a second battery, the manual requires its negative on the load side of the shunt. Aux does not provide a second current measurement. See §§3.3–3.5 before connecting or modifying these fixed leads.
How is commissioning completed?
Pair in VictronConnect, configure bank capacity and charging parameters, and choose the Aux function actually wired. Verify current direction with a known load and charge source. Synchronize state of charge after a confirmed full charge; a displayed 100% immediately after setup is not evidence of battery capacity.
If current is missing, look for a negative lead bypassing the shunt. If Bluetooth range is poor, first test close to the unit; the large conductors and surrounding metal can reduce range. VE.Direct provides a wired route to a compatible GX device. The canvas omits that data cable and the Aux circuit.
