Victron MPPT RS 450/100 connections

The SmartSolar MPPT RS 450/100 is an isolated solar charger for nominal 48 V battery systems, with 2 independent trackers and up to 100 A charging. The manual lists 5760 W total DC charging power and 4000 W per tracker. The generic catalog name does not select Tr screw terminals or MC4 connectors; verify that suffix before specifying PV connections.

Crimp shows one PV + / PV − pair, but the physical unit has 2 independent PV inputs. Each tracker must receive its own array; do not connect the same array to several trackers. The symbol cannot validate those separate strings. BATT + / BATT − map to the battery studs; protective grounding, remote control, voltage/temperature sensing, relay, and communication connections are omitted.

The specification table gives 18 A operating input per Tr tracker, 16 A per MC4 tracker, and 20 A short-circuit current per tracker for reverse-polarity protection. These are different limits; do not multiply a single terminal allowance to justify an unreviewed combined input.

450 V is the absolute PV ceiling, with 120 V startup and a nominal 65–450 V tracking range. There is an additional condition: array Voc must remain below eight times the battery float voltage. At 54 V float, that is 432 V. Design the string for cold weather while keeping the battery's approved settings; do not raise float voltage merely to accommodate an oversized string.

An external PV disconnect is required, rated for DC service at at least 450 V and the expected array current. It is not built into the charger.

Printed page 8 specifies a 125–150 A DC fuse, minimum 35 mm² per polarity for 0–2 m, and 70 mm² per polarity for 2–5 m. The table's battery-capacity minima are 200 Ah lead-acid or 50 Ah lithium; battery charge acceptance and BMS limits still govern. Battery-stud maximum torque is 14 N·m. Parallel conductors, where required, need a separate installation check.

Mount indoors in a dry, ventilated position; IP21 is not suitable for wet locations. Follow the manual's connection sequence, verify polarity on every tracker, and set the battery profile in VictronConnect before enabling charging. Integrate the battery's charge-permission controls and confirm sensor operation. The catalog does not model tracker independence or a complete high-voltage installation.

Firmware v1.33 adds error 41, “PV isolation failure”, to GX devices and the VRM Portal when isolation resistance falls below 100 kΩ. Victron's October 20, 2026 release announcement applies to the MPPT RS 450/100 and 450/200. Previously, the resistance value could only be monitored in VictronConnect. This is a monitoring update to existing hardware.

The update does not replace PV inspection or maintenance. Victron asks owners receiving this warning to have the installation inspected by a qualified installer as soon as possible. Crimp does not read the controller's firmware or isolation resistance; its drawing cannot confirm that a PV installation is safe.
