Run-length and manufacturer assumptions
The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.
Supporting parts
- 6.1 m total of 10 mm² (8 AWG) marine cable
- Terminations for 10 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
- 40 A fuse and holder on the positive run
- Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable
Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

What is the DMT1230?
The Abso DMT1230 charges a 12 V house battery at up to 30 A from an alternator/starter battery or its MPPT solar input. It is not the 50 A DMT1250 or the 24 V-output DMT2430. Alternator input automatically recognizes a 12 or 24 V source. The charger selects an available source; two inputs do not mean 30 A from each can be added at the output.
How do its channels map?
BATT + / BATT − are CH1, the house battery. PV + / PV − are CH2. ALT + is the positive of CH3, which also requires a negative connection omitted from the symbol. All three channel negatives are internally joined by a busbar. The separate chassis ground stud is isolated from that negative bus and must be connected as described in the installation chapter.
The drawing also omits the smart-alternator control terminal, battery temperature sensor port, display connection, and on/off switch. Tighten power terminal bolts to 4–5 N·m, then replace their protective cover.
What wiring and protection are specified?
The Rev D wiring table, page 9 gives 40 A protection and 10 mm² / AWG 8 for the CH1 house lead below 5 ft. For CH3 below 5 ft it gives 50 A and 16 mm² / AWG 6 on a 12 V source, or 25 A and 6 mm² / AWG 10 on a 24 V source. Battery protection belongs within 7 inches / 178 mm of each battery.
The table's solar fuse values are examples for particular 300 W arrays, not universal DMT1230 ratings. Size the actual PV wiring and protection from the array specifications. Verify all channel polarities before connection, beginning with the house battery that powers the charger; it needs at least 8 V to operate.
Which input and battery settings matter?
The operating table gives 14.5–50 V PV operation and 30 A maximum PV input. Check cold-corrected array Voc against the 50 V ceiling. Alternator input current is also limited to 30 A. Normal 12 V alternator startup is above 13.2 V; the documented control/manual override lowers startup to 12.3 V for smart-alternator operation. Verify shutdown on the actual vehicle.
Select chemistry, charge current, and termination behavior. Lithium current choices are 5/10/20/30 A; charge voltage is adjustable 13.9–14.6 V. The optional temperature sensor is ignored in Lithium and Program modes, so it cannot provide low-temperature lithium protection; the battery system must handle that requirement.
Where is it mounted?
Mount permanently indoors, vertically with terminals down, with 3 inches clearance around it. Keep it away from moisture, conductive contamination, and heat; do not mount upside down or obstruct ventilation.
