Sterling APD12 connections

The Sterling APD12 absorbs brief voltage spikes at a 12 V alternator. Its leads connect across the alternator output; the main charging current does not flow through the device.

Connection essentials

  • At the alternator

Mount close to the alternator, with leads across B+ and negative.

  • Before disconnects

Keep the protection connected on the alternator side when the battery is disconnected.

  • Suppression only

Plan charging control and battery protection separately. APD12 does not regulate sustained overvoltage.

The APD12 connects between those two conductors on the alternator side of the downstream disconnect. Main charging current bypasses the APD. What does APD12 protect?

The APD12 is the 12 V alternator protection device. It absorbs short voltage transients associated with an alternator losing its battery connection. It does not carry the alternator’s main charging current, limit charging current, or replace the lithium battery’s BMS and charge-control arrangement.

Where do the two protection leads connect?

Fit the device near the alternator and connect it in parallel across alternator positive and negative, ahead of downstream disconnects that could separate the battery. The installation sheet recommends wiring rated for 10 A and shows a 5 A fuse in the control connections. Position its ring terminals so a loosened main output cable does not remove the protective connection first. Follow the exact alternator stud and grounding arrangement rather than treating the device as an inline isolator.

What do the LED and alarm mean?

The red LED reports sustained high voltage; the optional alarm relay is rated 1 A, maximum 48 V. Those contacts are alarm circuitry, not another charging output. A fast absorbed transient may produce no visible warning. Conversely, a lit high-voltage warning does not mean the device can regulate a failed alternator: stop charging and investigate the cause.

Does the Crimp example include the APD leads?

The connection sketch shows the APD branch across the alternator. In the editable overview, the APD is a placement symbol and its leads are not drawn or sized. Retain the manufacturer diagram and size the alternator’s main cables and protection independently. Inspect loose connections and the underlying shutdown fault after any event; repeated battery disconnection under charge is not a normal operating strategy.
