Hella marine NaviLED TRIO 2LT980650-001 wiring diagram

Review how the Hella marine NaviLED TRIO 2LT980650-001 connects, how it operates and which installation requirements apply to this model.

Connection and installation overview

Navigation and anchor lights have separate positive supplies and a common negative. Follow the red, blue and black lead assignments and the selected switching arrangement; the two lighting modes must remain independently controlled.

Choose the correct light mode

2LT980650-001 combines masthead tricolour navigation sectors with an all-round white anchor light. The instructions describe the tricolour for sailing vessels under 20 m, and exclude its use while motoring or motorsailing. Select the vessel's appropriate navigation-light arrangement for the activity; an electrically illuminated lamp alone does not establish that the displayed lights are correct.

Three conductors, two switched functions

Black is common negative, red supplies tricolour navigation and blue supplies the white anchor function. Provide independent mode switching and a fuse no larger than 3 A as directed by Hella. Keep the functions distinct instead of joining both positive leads into one always-on feed. The catalog preserves all three physical leads but does not implement a navigation/anchor selector or interlock.

The current instruction sheet specifies 9–33 V input. It gives less than 3.5 W for combined port/starboard/stern and less than 1.5 W for anchor; its wiring table rounds these to less than 4 W and less than 2 W. The catalog uses the tighter technical-specification navigation bound, equivalent to approximately 0.29 A at nominal 12 V. Change the operating budget for anchor use and actual duration. Do not add the two modes as if both were required continuously. Terminal limits use the 3 A protection ceiling as a planning bound, not connector ampacity.

Align the optical sectors before fastening

Install the lamp where the navigation sectors and anchor light remain unobstructed. Align the mounting base to the vessel's fore-and-aft direction using the arrow and the installation drawing; the cable exit alone is not a reliable substitute for checking sector orientation. The sealed light engine fits over its mounting shaft and must be seated and secured as instructed.

Route the mast cable with strain relief and seal the connection without stressing the short factory cable. A large mast height makes the complete supply-and-return run important even for this small load. Confirm the voltage at the lamp, not just at the distribution panel.

Commission each mode separately

At dusk or in suitable controlled conditions, check port red, starboard green and stern white from their intended viewing sectors. Then switch to anchor and confirm the all-round white function. Verify that the panel's labels match what lights up at the masthead, and that selecting one operating mode does not leave the other unintentionally energized.

If one function fails, measure that positive feed against the shared negative and inspect the switch and cable joints. If both fail, start with the shared return and supply protection. The light engine is sealed; opening it to repair an LED compromises the intended assembly.

Build it out

Connect it to the rest of your system.

Add 2LT980650-001 to your diagram, then connect your batteries, chargers and loads. Crimp calculates cable sizes and checks the connections as you draw.

Every cable you draw there is sized against ABYC E-11, from the same tables as the reference on this page.

  1. A lug or terminal to match each post on the part
  2. Strain relief and boots so nothing chafes or shorts
  3. Cable and fuses sized once the whole system is drawn

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Manufacturer specifications describe the equipment. Crimp calculates cable results from the circuit and assumptions you enter.

What the catalog says

Manufacturer, model, ratings and which terminal does what come from the catalog. A newer revision, or the nameplate on the unit in your hand, can say something different — when it does, the nameplate wins.

ABYC E-11

What Crimp worked out

Sized against ABYC E-11. Boats built to UK or EU rules answer to ISO 13297 — check these figures against it before you build. The run length and the current above are what drive the result. Crimp doesn't know how warm your space gets; draw the cable inside an engine-bay zone on the canvas and it sizes for the heat.
