Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

This supply example retains the manufacturer's 10 A fuse. Follow the complete installation notes for connector polarity, mounting, controls and commissioning; verify the actual cable route and equipment revision. Manufacturer installation manual

Select the GE variant and its supply

This record covers IC-M330GE with the supplied GPS antenna and European channel variant. The operating range is 10.8–15.6 V DC, nominal 13.8 V with negative ground. It must not be connected directly to a 24 V bank. The manual states up to 5 A at 25 W transmit and 1 A at maximum audio, both at 13.8 V. Use the transmit value for supply planning; radio use and receive time determine daily energy.

Protect the DC feed separately from the RF system

Connect the supplied red positive and black negative cable, retaining its F 250 V 10 A fuse. Here 250 V is the fuse’s voltage rating, not the radio supply. Do not increase fuse current if it opens: find the fault first. Protect joined power, NMEA and speaker conductors from water as shown in the manual. The separate rear ground terminal is for the vessel grounding/interference arrangement; it does not replace the black DC return.

Identify the data and antenna interfaces

The VHF antenna uses a PL-259 connector on the radio’s antenna socket. Never transmit without an appropriate antenna. The supplied GPS antenna needs a clear sky view. NMEA 0183 input is yellow A/+ and green B/−; output is white A/+ and brown B/−. These are data pairs and must not be connected as power. The symbol keeps them as signal markers, with no implied DC continuity.

Commission DSC deliberately

Enter and verify the assigned MMSI and any region-specific identifiers following the manual before relying on DSC. Check that the display has valid position and time from GNSS or a compatible NMEA source. Test receive audio and an appropriate routine radio check; do not send a distress alert to test installation. If the radio resets on transmit, measure voltage at its power connector during transmission and inspect joints. If it receives but has poor transmit range, inspect the antenna/coax rather than increasing DC fuse size.

Manual and scope

Icom installation manual, A7420D-1EX-10, September 2023; printed pp. 53–58 for connections, fuse, mounting and electrical specifications; MMSI and DSC chapters. The original PDF is retained in the marine source ledger. The drawing represents the identified electrical interfaces; it does not simulate the equipment’s mechanical performance, radio signals or fluid system. Unpublished connector ampacity and startup current remain unspecified.

Build it out

Connect it to the rest of your system.

Add IC-M330GE to your diagram, then connect your batteries, chargers and loads. Crimp calculates cable sizes and checks the connections as you draw.

Every cable you draw there is sized against ABYC E-11, from the same tables as the reference on this page.

Supporting parts

  1. 6.1 m total of 2.5 mm² (13 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 2.5 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 10 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Method & provenance

Where the specifications and sizing come from.

Manufacturer specifications describe the equipment. Crimp calculates cable results from the circuit and assumptions you enter.

From the maker

What the catalog says

Manufacturer, model, ratings and which terminal does what come from the catalog. A newer revision, or the nameplate on the unit in your hand, can say something different — when it does, the nameplate wins.

ABYC E-11

What Crimp worked out

Sized against ABYC E-11. Boats built to UK or EU rules answer to ISO 13297 — check these figures against it before you build. The run length and the current above are what drive the result. Crimp doesn't know how warm your space gets; draw the cable inside an engine-bay zone on the canvas and it sizes for the heat.
