Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

Match the washdown part number

P501J-119N-3A is the 12 V HotShot HD5 package with a 40-mesh inlet strainer and trigger nozzle. Its published supply range is 9–13.6 V. Open flow is 5 US GPM, while maximum pressure and pressure-switch cutoff are 70 PSI; those values do not occur simultaneously. The 16 A catalog demand is the specified maximum operating draw at 70 PSI, with startup current unpublished. Energy estimates must use actual washdown run time.

Retain 20 A protection and adequate extensions

Connect red to positive and black to negative, with the specified 20 A fuse and an accessible pump switch. Factory leads are 12 inches of 14 AWG, identified by Jabsco as 2.5 mm². Do not extend them with smaller conductors. The companion HD installation manual sizes by total positive-plus-return length: 14 AWG/2.5 mm² for 6–10 feet total, then larger cable for longer routes. A one-metre outgoing and one-metre return example fits that range; the fuse does not authorize reducing the conductor size.

Mount dry and plumb the inlet correctly

Mount with its rubber feet on a rigid surface above the waterline, dry and ventilated. It may be horizontal or vertical with the pumphead down. Fit the supplied strainer upstream, follow the head’s flow arrow and secure correctly sized flexible hose and retained port fittings. The maximum dry-prime lift is 8 feet (2.4 m), not a target for every installation. A through-hull supply needs the vessel’s appropriate accessible shutoff and sound hose installation.

Commission the pressure switch and respect duty

Open the discharge nozzle, confirm the inlet is in water and let the pump prime. Closing the nozzle should let pressure rise until the pump stops; reopening should restart it. Check every joint for leaks and switch off manually after use. The pump is rated for intermittent service. Its thermal cutout can reset and restart automatically after cooling, so isolate the supply before servicing. A cycle that overheats, repeatedly restarts with the nozzle shut or struggles to prime calls for correcting the installation, not a larger fuse.

Manual and scope

Jabsco installation manual, P501J-119N-3A Rev A, April 2024; datasheet p. 2 electrical/duty/lead table; companion HD IOM pp. 4–5 mounting, polarity and total-length wire table. The original PDF is retained in the marine source ledger. The drawing represents the identified electrical interfaces; it does not simulate the equipment’s mechanical performance, radio signals or fluid system. Unpublished connector ampacity and startup current remain unspecified.

Build it out

Connect it to the rest of your system.

Add P501J-119N-3A to your diagram, then connect your batteries, chargers and loads. Crimp calculates cable sizes and checks the connections as you draw.

Every cable you draw there is sized against ABYC E-11, from the same tables as the reference on this page.

Supporting parts

  1. 6.6 ft total of 13 AWG (2.5 mm²) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 13 AWG cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 20 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Where the specifications and sizing come from.

Manufacturer specifications describe the equipment. Crimp calculates cable results from the circuit and assumptions you enter.

From the maker

What the catalog says

Manufacturer, model, ratings and which terminal does what come from the catalog. A newer revision, or the nameplate on the unit in your hand, can say something different — when it does, the nameplate wins.

ABYC E-11

What Crimp worked out

Sized against ABYC E-11 — the US reference, and what Transport Canada accepts as an alternative to TP 1332 for pleasure craft under 24 m. The run length and the current above are what drive the result. Crimp doesn't know how warm your space gets; draw the cable inside an engine-bay zone on the canvas and it sizes for the heat.
