About this terminal map

Opening this part in Crimp starts a new project with the equipment placed on its own. Use the manufacturer documentation to plan its AC connections and protective devices.

The map identifies line, neutral and protective-earth connections. This page does not calculate an AC cable size or protection rating.

A 125 V AC inlet at the boat

BM30NT is the stainless 30 A / 125 V SmartPlug boat-side inlet identified in the current marine catalog. In a nominal 120 V shore installation, it accepts the matching SmartPlug boat-end connector. The marina end of the cord must separately match the pedestal. This inlet does not turn AC into 12 V DC; a charger or other converter is a separate downstream component.

Keep line, neutral and protective earth separate

The three canvas connections represent AC line, neutral and protective earth. Their 30 A limits come from the product rating. They must not be wired as a positive/negative DC pair, and protective earth is not a normal load-current return. The symbol marks the shore entry point rather than a complete shore-power safety system.

Plan the inlet-to-main-panel cable, disconnect/overcurrent protection and ground-fault protection as an AC installation. The 30 A inlet rating is an upper limit, not a guaranteed available load or permission to up-rate an existing cable. Confirm source voltage, correct conductor identity and the vessel's complete grounding arrangement before energizing. Do not create a neutral-to-earth link at the inlet as an improvised substitute for an established system design.

Prepare a sound mechanical connection

De-energize and disconnect the shore cord before installation. Inspect the existing conductors for heat damage or corrosion rather than transferring damaged ends into a new inlet. Use the correct mounting gasket, support the cable and provide the specified rear enclosure/strain relief. Check plug fit and full engagement of the locking features before restoring power.

The recovered installation sheet is for the non-metallic BM30 family, while this component is stainless BM30NT. It shows color-coded hot, neutral and ground connections, but is not exact-part evidence for BM30NT stripping length, terminal torque, conductor acceptance or rear hardware. Those details must come from the instructions supplied with this exact inlet. Verification therefore remains family-only for installation mechanics; no borrowed torque has been published as an NT specification.

Commission the complete shore circuit

With the completed installation inspected, verify polarity and the operation of the installed protective devices using their instructions. Connect and disconnect with the shore supply turned off so the inlet is not being used as a load-breaking switch. Ensure the boat-side connector fully locks and the cover engages as intended.

Investigate warmth, discoloration, arcing marks, damaged seals or loose connections promptly. A larger breaker does not repair a resistive contact. Keep contacts clean and dry and support the shore cord so its weight and movement are not carried by the electrical connection alone.

Build it out

Connect it to the rest of your system.

Add BM30NT to your diagram, then connect your batteries, chargers and loads. Crimp calculates cable sizes and checks the connections as you draw.

Every cable you draw there is sized against ABYC E-11, from the same tables as the reference on this page.

Supporting parts

  1. A lug or terminal to match each post on the part
  2. Strain relief and boots so nothing chafes or shorts
  3. Cable and fuses sized once the whole system is drawn

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Method & provenance

Where the specifications and sizing come from.

Manufacturer specifications describe the equipment. Crimp calculates cable results from the circuit and assumptions you enter.

From the maker

What the catalog says

Manufacturer, model, ratings and which terminal does what come from the catalog. A newer revision, or the nameplate on the unit in your hand, can say something different — when it does, the nameplate wins.

ABYC E-11

What Crimp worked out

Sized against ABYC E-11 — the US reference, and what Transport Canada accepts as an alternative to TP 1332 for pleasure craft under 24 m. The run length and the current above are what drive the result. Crimp doesn't know how warm your space gets; draw the cable inside an engine-bay zone on the canvas and it sizes for the heat.
