Connection and installation overview

This Terrova is a 24 V motor with a manufacturer-specified 60 A circuit breaker. Its published 56 A maximum is explicitly intermittent, so it does not establish average or continuous consumption. Use Minn Kota's conductor table, actual extension length and battery requirements.

The exact 24 V Terrova

1358380 is the brushed freshwater Terrova with 80 lb thrust, a 60-inch shaft and wireless remote. It is not the QUEST brushless variant, and this SKU does not include a foot pedal or built-in sonar. The heading sensor supports the relevant GPS functions, but is an additional installation item with its own wiring and placement instructions.

Build the correct motor supply

Use a 24 V supply arrangement matching Minn Kota's battery instructions. With two 12 V batteries in series, connect the motor across the full bank, not across one battery. Confirm polarity and total voltage before connecting. Do not power unrelated electronics from one half of that series bank or add charger/ground connections that defeat the manufacturer's isolation and bonding guidance.

For an 80 lb motor, the manual specifies a 60 A circuit breaker with at least a 24 V DC rating. Its current table lists 56 A as maximum intermittent draw and explicitly says it is not a continuous current rating. The catalog leaves continuous draw and startup surge unset; neither 56 A nor the 60 A breaker is an honest all-day consumption estimate. Terminal values are protection-based planning bounds.

Use the manufacturer's extension table

The 80 lb row specifies extension conductors of 8 AWG for 5 ft, 6 AWG for 10 or 15 ft, 4 AWG for 20 ft, and 2 AWG for 25 ft. These are the manual's extension lengths and assumptions, not a generic substitute for the complete circuit design. The table assumes 105 °C conductors, limited bundling outside engine spaces and no more than 3% drop at maximum power. Longer or materially different installations need a revised design.

Keep battery connections clean, covered and mechanically secure. Match the battery and charger to the series arrangement. The reviewed manual cautions that lithium batteries hold higher voltage and that prolonged operation above 85% speed can damage this motor; verify the applicable battery guidance for the actual hardware before configuring it.

Mount, deploy and test under control

Check bow clearance, shaft travel and secure stowage before drilling. Follow the mounting instructions for the base and any stabilizer. Keep people and objects clear of the propeller whenever power is connected, and disconnect the motor before propeller work.

Commission steering, remote control and propeller operation in a clear area, then calibrate the heading/GPS system using its instructions. Confirm you can cancel automatic control promptly. Position-hold performance depends on satellite reception, wind, current and available thrust; maintain an operator and an appropriate conventional anchoring plan. For weak thrust or resets, inspect battery condition, connection drop and the propeller before changing protection.

Manuals and evidence

Terrova product manual, English pp. 36–39, covers circuit protection, extension sizes, battery cautions and 24 V wiring. The PDF is actually Rev E despite the older filename. Exact 1358380 product page confirms the selected hardware and links its heading-sensor and remote manuals. The original 76 MB PDF is retained in the evidence archive.

Build it out

Connect it to the rest of your system.

Add 1358380 to your diagram, then connect your batteries, chargers and loads. Crimp calculates cable sizes and checks the connections as you draw.

Every cable you draw there is sized against ABYC E-11, from the same tables as the reference on this page.

Supporting parts

  1. A lug or terminal to match each post on the part
  2. Strain relief and boots so nothing chafes or shorts
  3. Cable and fuses sized once the whole system is drawn

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Manufacturer specifications describe the equipment. Crimp calculates cable results from the circuit and assumptions you enter.

What the catalog says

Manufacturer, model, ratings and which terminal does what come from the catalog. A newer revision, or the nameplate on the unit in your hand, can say something different — when it does, the nameplate wins.

ABYC E-11

What Crimp worked out

Sized against ABYC E-11 — the US reference, and what Transport Canada accepts as an alternative to TP 1332 for pleasure craft under 24 m. The run length and the current above are what drive the result. Crimp doesn't know how warm your space gets; draw the cable inside an engine-bay zone on the canvas and it sizes for the heat.
