What goes through it

BP1552 is the 12 V Gulper 220 shower-waste diaphragm pump. Mounting its motor outside the shower sump makes the valves accessible and avoids a submerged electrical motor. It handles ordinary shower debris without an inlet filter. That feature does not make it a toilet macerator or a pump for flammable liquids. BP1554 is the separate 24 V version.

Wire the supply without inventing a load

The manual specifies red positive, black negative, a 5 A automotive fuse in the positive lead, and connecting wire of at least 1.5 mm². Provide a switch or the appropriate shower control and a means to isolate power before servicing. Increase conductor size where the full circuit length and voltage drop require it; the minimum is not a universal cable size for every installation.

The installation sheet does not establish this exact pump's operating current or startup peak. Those fields remain empty in the catalog rather than treating its 5 A fuse as draw. The terminal limit is a protected-circuit planning bound. Enter a manufacturer-confirmed or measured working draw before relying on a daily energy estimate. The two pins describe only the motor supply, not an automatic shower-sensor circuit.

Fit the head and hoses for access

Choose a dry, ventilated location and retain room to remove the pump head. If mounting vertically, place the head below the motor. Rotate the head to suit the route by following the clamp instructions; do not force the hoses to compensate for the wrong orientation. Use reinforced suction hose and secure, airtight connections, with no unnecessary rises or tight bends.

Match hose and fittings to the actual ports supplied with your pump. Locate the discharge so water cannot siphon into the vessel. Keep the routing and maintenance access visible in the installation record; electrical sizing alone cannot validate this plumbing.

Commission with a real shower flow

Run clean water through the shower and verify the pump clears it without a rising tray level. Check the connections while pumping and inspect again after stopping. Confirm the switch can stop the pump and the isolator removes power.

If the motor runs but pumping is weak, check suction air leaks, flattened hose and debris around the diaphragm valves. If it does not run, inspect supply voltage at the pump, the switch and the correct fuse before dismantling the wet end. Isolate first: the diaphragm and valves are service items, whereas repeatedly fitting larger fuses can conceal a wiring or motor fault.

Manual and evidence

Whale Gulper 220 installation sheet, PDF pp. 1–2, covers BP1552/BP1554, mounting, wiring and troubleshooting. The file is linked from Whale's grey-waste range. Its hash and the operating-current gap are retained in the marine ledger.

Check the model, ratings and connection points against your own unit before choosing installation hardware.

Catalog specification

12 V grey-water pump with a required 5 A automotive fuse and at least 1.5 mm² supply wiring. The installation manual does not establish operating current, so no draw or surge is invented. Fit the motor in a dry location; the 5 A terminal value is a protected-circuit planning bound, not motor consumption.
