Use a dedicated high-water float

33ALA is the 12 V alarm kit. It is intended to warn when bilge water rises beyond the normal pump-control level. Place its float about 2 inches (5 cm) above the existing bilge-pump float switch, with clearance for full travel. Sharing the ordinary pump float would cause an alarm during normal pump cycles and would lose the intended independent high-water threshold.

Follow the series alarm wiring

The manual’s wiring diagram shows battery positive, the high-water float, a 1 A fuse, then the red alarm lead; the black alarm lead returns to battery negative. Provide source-side protection for the wiring as required by the installation as well as retaining the specified alarm fuse. The catalog’s supply pair represents the alarm circuit as an assembly; it does not show the float closed inside the enclosure. No current demand is derived from the 20 A float-switch rating in the model table.

Mount the panel and float for their different jobs

Put the audible/visual panel where the alarm can be heard and seen. The panel cutout is 2.125 inches (54 mm). Keep sealed joints above expected bilge water, support the cable and follow the float mounting illustration, including its 30-degree longitudinal and 5-degree transverse limits. The equipment tolerates the illustrated spray exposure; that is not permission to direct a cleaning jet into it or expose it to fuel and corrosive liquids.

Test the warning rather than only the pump

Lift the high-water float’s test lever and verify both audible and visual indications at the normal helm position. Lower it and confirm the alarm clears. Repeat during routine bilge checks and inspect the separate float for obstructions. A running bilge pump does not prove this circuit is healthy. The walkthrough is an overview because the external float topology and unpublished alarm consumption cannot be represented by an ordinary fixed-current load example.

Build it out

Connect it to the rest of your system.

Add 33ALA to your diagram, then connect your batteries, chargers and loads. Crimp calculates cable sizes and checks the connections as you draw.

Every cable you draw there is sized against ABYC E-11, from the same tables as the reference on this page.

Supporting parts

  1. A lug or terminal to match each post on the part
  2. Strain relief and boots so nothing chafes or shorts
  3. Cable and fuses sized once the whole system is drawn

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Where the specifications and sizing come from.

Manufacturer specifications describe the equipment. Crimp calculates cable results from the circuit and assumptions you enter.

From the maker

What the catalog says

Manufacturer, model, ratings and which terminal does what come from the catalog. A newer revision, or the nameplate on the unit in your hand, can say something different — when it does, the nameplate wins.

ABYC E-11

What Crimp worked out

Sized against ABYC E-11 — the US reference, and what Transport Canada accepts as an alternative to TP 1332 for pleasure craft under 24 m. The run length and the current above are what drive the result. Crimp doesn't know how warm your space gets; draw the cable inside an engine-bay zone on the canvas and it sizes for the heat.
