Connection essentials

  • Two terminal pairs

Connect PV to the array and BATT to the house bank. House loads need separate protected battery distribution.

  • Battery before solar

Connect the battery first, wait 10 seconds and check detected voltage and charge profile before connecting solar.

  • Check both PV limits

Check the complete array against both the 100 V cold-weather voltage limit and the 35 A short-circuit-current limit.

Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

Supporting parts

  1. 6 m total of 10 mm² (8 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 10 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 40 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Where do the solar panels and battery connect?

This example uses the Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30, with Bluetooth and VE.Direct. Connect the array to PV + / PV − and the house bank to BATT + / BATT −. There are no physical LOAD terminals: house loads use protected battery distribution.

For automatic voltage detection, follow Victron's connection sequence:

  • Connect the battery first: check polarity, connect it and wait 10 seconds.
  • Verify the detected voltage and charging profile for your battery.
  • Connect PV after these checks.

The shared manual also covers the 100/50; use the 100/30 column and confirm the model on your unit.

What battery fuse and cable size does the MPPT 100/30 need?

Victron's battery fuse table specifies 35 A minimum and 40 A maximum for the 100/30. The example's calculated battery fuse falls within that range. This protects the battery cable; it does not specify a PV-string fuse.

The example uses 3 m (about 9.8 ft) battery cables each way, with the controller's 30 A rated output and the return included in voltage drop. Enter your actual route and installation conditions in the wire size calculator.

Terminals accept up to 16 mm² / 6 AWG; this is a physical connection limit, not a recommended cable size. Victron specifies mounting within 3 m of the battery, never directly above it, with 10 cm clearance above and below.

What wire type and terminal torque does the 100/30 require?

Use flexible, multistranded copper cable for both battery and PV connections. Victron's wiring precautions limit each individual strand to 0.4 mm (0.016 in) diameter. This describes the strands inside the cable, not the total cable cross-section: a cable can fit the terminal yet have strands that are too coarse.

Tighten the battery and PV screw connections to 1.6 N·m, as specified in the 100/30–100/50 connection instructions. Use the value for this model rather than transferring a torque from a smaller SmartSolar controller.

The manual's overheating guidance identifies rigid conductors, soldered wire ends, loose screws and insulation inserted into the clamping area as connection hazards. Keep the conductor intact when preparing the end, and check that the terminal clamps the conductor securely. The cable size and terminal's maximum capacity do not replace these connection requirements.

How much solar can the 100/30 accept?

Check all three 100/30 ratings:

  • 30 A battery charge output. This is the current delivered to the bank.
  • 35 A maximum PV short-circuit current. Check the complete array configuration.
  • 100 V maximum PV open-circuit voltage. Include cold-weather voltage rise using the panels' temperature coefficient.

Nominal PV power is 440 W at 12 V or 880 W at 24 V. Those figures do not replace the voltage and current limits. Assess PV fuses and disconnects separately against the panel documentation and Victron's instructions.

Are the example battery and panels selected products?

No. The drawing sizes the battery-side charge circuit and uses a 12 V, 200 Ah placeholder bank with a 360 W reference array at 20 V operating voltage and 24 V open-circuit voltage. These are editable planning inputs, not a solar-yield prediction. Replace them with your equipment before reviewing the PV wiring.

How do I add house loads?

Supply loads through protected battery distribution, such as a Blue Sea 5026 fuse block. The boat wiring example shows this controller with distribution and loads. Review the sizing methodology as you adapt the installation.

Describe your setup to draft a system with SmartSolar 100/30 connected. Review the selected parts and cable lengths, then edit the diagram in Crimp.

The model only picks parts and draws the connections. Every wire size and fuse rating still comes from Crimp's own sizing, never from the model.
