Cable sizing for this example

Use the diagram as a starting point for your installation. Replace the example equipment and cable lengths with your own, and check the connections against your exact model's instructions.

3 m one way

12 V system

Wire
1.5 mm² · 16 AWG
Example fuse
5 A
Design current
3 A
Voltage drop

Sized against ABYC E-11. The design current is the part's continuous draw. The length is one way; voltage drop includes an equal-length return.

Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

Which Turbo-Vent is represented?

This entry covers the standard Turbo-Vent with Polar Control, not a Turbo-Vent Premium. The manufacturer manual, pages 4–5, gives 12 V nominal, 8–16 V operating range, 0.3–3 A ±10% and 36 W. The catalog's 3 A load is the published upper nominal operating current; its 3.3 A terminal envelope includes the stated tolerance. Actual energy use depends on speed and thermostat cycling.

What does the electrical connection need?

Connect red to positive and black to return using the correct wiring arrangement for the supplied version. The connection drawings, pages 10–11, distinguish the controls. The technical data identifies 1 mm² supplied cable and an internal 5 A self-resetting fuse. That internal device is not a specification for the vehicle's external branch fuse. Protect the installation's supply cable according to its route and rating; do not infer operating current from the 5 A protection value.

What needs checking before cutting the roof?

The installation instructions, page 6 onward, show a 39 cm square opening and a roof thickness of 30–85 mm. Check those dimensions against the supplied frame and roof structure before cutting. Orient the hinges toward the front of the vehicle, use the specified sealing material and fastening pattern, and keep wiring out of moving or pinched areas. Check the sealed roof joint after installation.

How should the fan be used and maintained?

Use the direction and speed controls for intake or extraction, with Polar Control setting the temperature response. Stop the fan before reaching near the blades. The use and maintenance guidance, page 15, requires the rooflight to be closed before travel and prohibits opening it while moving. Inspect the cover, seals and fixings regularly; use mild cleaning products rather than abrasive or aggressive solvents. A fan that slows or stops should be checked for obstruction, supply voltage and control setting before assuming motor failure.

Build it out

Connect it to the rest of your system.

Add Turbo-Vent to your diagram, then connect your batteries, chargers and loads. Crimp calculates cable sizes and checks the connections as you draw.

Every cable you draw there is sized against ABYC E-11, from the same tables as the reference on this page.

Supporting parts

  1. 6.1 m total of 1.5 mm² (16 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 1.5 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 5 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Method & provenance

Where the specifications and sizing come from.

Manufacturer specifications describe the equipment. Crimp calculates cable results from the circuit and assumptions you enter.

What the catalog says

Manufacturer, model, ratings and which terminal does what come from the catalog. A newer revision, or the nameplate on the unit in your hand, can say something different — when it does, the nameplate wins.

ABYC E-11

What Crimp worked out

Sized against ABYC E-11. Boats built to UK or EU rules answer to ISO 13297 — check these figures against it before you build. The run length and the current above are what drive the result. Crimp doesn't know how warm your space gets; draw the cable inside an engine-bay zone on the canvas and it sizes for the heat.
